Palli, the First Carbon -Neutral Solar Hamlet: Best  Example of ‘Sabka Prayas’

The unrevealed hamlet of Palli in Jammu and Kashmir's border district of Samba on 24th April, 2022, became the country's first 'carbon-neutral panchayat'.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation a 500 kilowatt solar plant, installed in a record time of nearly three weeks.

The Prime Minister said that Palli has shown the way to the country by becoming carbon neutral.

Modiji stated, "With the inauguration of a 500 kW solar power plant at Palli, it is moving towards becoming the country's first panchayat to become carbon-neutral ...The people of Palli have demonstrated what 'Sabka Prayas' can do".  People of Palli have set an outstanding example by helping in the project and also provided food to people engaged in the project. This project has 1,500 solar panels which will provide electricity to 340 houses under the central government’s ‘Gram Urja Swaraj Programme’. In this way the clean and green energy will be generated at low cost that will have positive impact on human health as well as on environment. This project will also help to achieve the goal 7, which is one of the 17 sustainable developments goals( 17 SDGs were set up by UN in 2015), which focuses on affordable and clean energy.

The success story of this village can be well understood in the words of one of the Palli villagers Mr.Gurudeep Singh, who said, “It is a red-letter day for us. With the blessings of Modi ji, the village has entered into the history of India as the first carbon-neutral solar village. We thank the Prime Minister for choosing this hamlet across the country”. From the macadamized roads to the recently launched electric bus service, the village located just 17 km from the winter capital Jammu is witnessing a major transformation with an upgraded Panchayat Ghar, renovated government high school building, a new pond and improved playfields and electric bus ride.

Palli’s sarpanch Ravinder Sharma, who interacted with the PM, told him that village has LED bulbs, solar cookers and solar stoves. When Sarpanch was asked about irrigation of farmlands he said that 10 such pumps have been installed and 40 more will be installed in the next phase. Modiji appreciated the efforts of the Palli villagers and also motivated them by saying that they should celebrate the birthday of the village in which all villagers should participate.

I think not only India but also whole world should learn from this small hamlet which is targeting on creating carbon neutral places, organic farming, affordable and clean energy etc. As we know the whole system in this particular place is operated on solar panels and at the same time, fulfilling government schemes like ‘Pradhan Mantri Shaj Bijli Har ghar Yojana- Saubhagya’. In this way we can find the substitute of kerosene, improve health services, improve communications, ensure public safety, increase job opportunities, provide better life especially to women etc. and it would be possible not only by the initiatives of government but by ‘SABKA PRAYAS’.
